Forgotten Kisses

We recently had a lovely family over for dinner and they brought a unique healthy dessert. I'm sure you may have seen this odd looking pile of sweetness before- but maybe like me was met with unsteadiness and insecurities, which always encroach when facing a new, unfamiliar dessert, of course! These cookies are a whole new experience for eating dessert. They are simply delightful and are less than 45 calories!

Picture of Meringue Cookies ("Forgotten Kisses") Recipe

So here is the recipe for "Forgotten Kisses" aka Meringue Cookies.

2 large egg whites, at room temperature
2/3 cup confectioner's sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips or finely chopped semisweet chocolates
Chopped nuts optional (add as much as desired)

Preheat oven to 200 degrees (this usually takes forever... ;) ).
In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites until foamy. (Be careful not to over beat.) Add the sugar gradually, about 3 tablespoons at a time. When 1/2 of the sugar has been added, add the vanilla extract. Continue beating and adding remaining sugar in batches, until all of the sugar is dissolved and the meringue is very shiny and tight. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts.

To transfer the goop to the baking sheet, I recommend using a pastry/icing bag. This will simply make your life easier and make for a smaller kiss (which is better, surprisingly, because of the final texture. Let's just say, its easier to fit in your mouth without blowing snowstorms everywhere)! So, Use an icing bag and squeeze a half-dollar sized amount per cookie onto a cookie sheet (greased or lined with parchment paper.

Bake for about 3 hours or until dried and lightly browned. I am told it should look like a lightly roasted marshmallow, but I have little comprehension of this visual, seeing as I always burn my marshmallows to a crisp. Do NOT make a crispy burnt marshmallow-like cookie.

Oh, and this recipe will make about 4 dozen.......... haha.

This Is Not a Psalm of Lament

This week I transitioned into a new set of classes. In this adventure, I have already hit a roadblock as my textbooks have yet to come....if you will please, hurry up Amazon.com!

The first assignment for one of my classes was due yesterday, in which I had the pleasure of responding to the question: How and when might lament psalms be used in corporate worship? What is your opinion?

This has sparked an interesting conversation among my peers and has raised further insight to the role of worship in the Church. The role of worship is to glorify God. That is the purpose of everything. So, many people disagree with lamenting psalms to be used in a congregational worship context...what can be glorifying to God about complaining, right?...

Well, there are numerous things that glorify God in lamenting.

But first we must recognize what the word Lament means.

According to the 1913 Mariam-Webster Dictionary:

"Grief or sorrow expressed in complaints or cries; a wailing; a moaning; a weeping; mourning"
Lamenting in a biblical sense is more than being upset about circumstances, though. It is an expression of the Spirit inside of you communicating to God. That feeling of inward parts breaking (many think of this as heartache), which cannot be expressed. You know what I am talking about, that awful, painful longing to see justice, peace, love and ultimately be with our betrothed Jesus.
Romans 8 is a great place of reference when seeking knowledge on the Spirit and understanding why we need to lament. Romans 8:26-27 states, " Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."
When there is a unified spirit or grief within a church body, then lamenting together is more than appropriate- it is needed. If there is a call to repentance for the entire body, then lamenting together is more than appropriate- it is needed. If there is a charge to pray for our nation(s), then lamenting together is more than appropriate- it is needed. Lamenting in congregational worship is simply another type of communion with each other, the Spirit, and the Father.
Psalms of lament are purposed for the magnification of the glory of the Lord amidst the most painful and trying of circumstances; so, unless there is a common unity within the corporate body during worship, lament psalms may not always be appropriate. For example, singing David's Lamentation would NOT be appropriate for a congregation to sing at a baptism or on Easter Sunday, even if one person is grieved.
Furthermore, if there is no uplifting of God in the process of the soul grief, then lamenting may be more damaging in the worship of a congregation. However, lament psalms are significantly important in releasing soul grief (the grief of the spirit that cannot be expressed outwardly but in song, groaning, tongues, etc.).
Even in corporate worship, if there is a call to prayer for a nation(s) [as in Psalms 89 and 106], a call to repentance for the body, or a common need from God- we ought to lament together and bear one another's burdens. Many Christians today would rather think of God as love, which He definitely is, but he is so much MORE! God is not just love, He is everything. He is to be feared, reverenced, glorified. With that, I believe that it is also important to recognize that a majority of the psalms that are lamenting over wrongs done by others make reference to God's vengeance. His wrath is glorious, aweful (in every sense of the word), and powerful.

With this, it is important to recognize that lamenting psalms are always coupled with praise of some form. I believe this is because while our spirits need to grieve and communicate from time to time, praise is always our weapon in warfare. Psalm 149:6-9 says, "Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute on them the written judgment-This honor have all His saints. Praise the Lord!" We must always bring ourselves back to a place of praise. If it is true lamenting of the spirit, this will come naturally, because while we are carnal, we know God. God is worthy of praise. He is sovereign.
We are familiar with the story of Job. Job laments and is faced with his humanity before God in a remarkable way, I pray I never have to endure on this earth. God put Job "in his place", so to speak. It is his humanity and his ultimate obedience, humility before God and his worship that God blesses and turns evil away from Job. Finding the wonder and glory in the midst of all circumstances is the only way to fully live out our purpose on this earth and the only way to maintain joy. I am reminded of Paul imprisoned in the book of Philippians. He praised God in his circumstances and was able to find the joy in all the trials, so much so that he was able to be single-minded and spread and defend the gospel for Christ with the most fellowship of the saints in his heart, mind, and spirit. Praise is so utterly important.
To conclude, we need to comfort our spirits when the time is right and find ways to glorify God in our soul-grief and lamentations- especially together with other saints. Where 2 or more are gathered in His name, He is in the midst of them (*personal paraphrase of Matt. 18:20).
Thoughts on the subject or ideas of how to lament effectively with the saints are highly appreciated!

Count Your... Pies, Name Them One By One!

Think That Christ Has Promised You His Wealth Untold...

The last couple of days have been one blessing after another. It started out with a voicemail from the Dell Scholarship stating that although I have not been able to fulfill all the requirements, they are going to send me a computer anyways! I couldn't believe it. I was getting so desperate for a computer to use for school, I almost went and bought the cheapest working computer I could find. The voicemail continued on to give directions for how to verify my address and the shipment procedures and indicated the model of Dell I was going to be receiving...

This contraption is what Google showed me.

For those of you who do not personally know me, I am the epitome of "techno-tard". So the humor continued as I did some more research on the Dell 12 XPS Convertible Ultrabook that is priced a little over $1,000. I was simply going to buy a crappy little computer that had the internet and word (probably the 1902 version...), but by waiting a few days longer, I was blessed this interesting tablet-laptop.

He came by truck the following day, and I named it Burt.

Do Not Be Discouraged, God Is Over All!

I also received my financial aid for school today and won't be kicked out! Woot, woot! Early last week I was emailed about a required payment due by this Friday. God's timing is always perfect. My federal financial aid being disbursed is also a blessing for another reason- it activates the rest of my scholarship! So, Lord willing, I will be able to graduate debt-free in a few years!

Count Your Many Blessings, Name Them One By One...

Finally, along with this cool fall weather that rolled in this week, came "the baking mood". Now, if you don't know what I mean by "the baking mood", you're probably really skinny or are a single guy living in Antarctica far away from any females of any species.

DON'T Be This Man!

In all seriousness, I need to stay out of the kitchen... In the last five days, I have baked:
Bacon, cheese and chive scones
Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting
Cinnamon French Toast Bake
Pita Chip Breakfast Casserole
Sandy's Chocolate Chip Cookies
Honey Pie
Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl Moose Pie

....and I am still looking for more to make! I can't get enough. I have run in to one problem, though. I am cooking too fast for the Boys to keep up with- you'd think five boys would eat a lot faster than they are!

This is a picture of my Honey Pie.

...And You Will Be Singing As the Days Go By!

All in all, it is only Wednesday and my cup is running over! I pray the Lord continue to spread His wealth of rich blessings down on each of you and that you can find something sweet to enjoy today (you're welcome to come have pie with me).

the Mayor, the Mare, and the Mirror

So, I have finally returned to my blog after an absence of just under a year and a half. With a little revamping, I am encouraged to share my journey thus far.
What can I say...?
A LOT has happened in the last year and a half. But, rather than catching you up on all the boring details, I will simply state my current standings:

The Mayor
I recently returned to my beloved land of Texas. I reconnected with a couple friends from years past and found a common interest with one named Sarah. Sarah and I were on the hunt for a church and decided to form an alliance- an united front, if you will. We decided to visit Christ Fellowship and were submerged into a whole new level of culture-shock. It was so unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was free. It was beautiful. It was right. I encountered the Lord in a whole new way than I ever even knew was possible. I was exposed to things I had no insight to and that was okay! I have found a new passion in Christ and realized that He is a personal savior; He is my personal savior. So I have committed to Him and am being constantly amazed by His power, grace, gifts and miracles. I am learning to give Yahweh command of every aspect of my life.
The Mare
Another significant change in my life is that I am now in a relationship. That's right, you heard it. ME, Brooklinn Raughton, is in a relationship. He is strong and  steady (which alone is a great gift from God, as I have never been anything but a constant ball of change). He is longsuffering, humorous and kind. He also tends to say "mayor", "mare", and "mirror" identically...
So without further ado, here is a great shot of us (many thanks to our dear friend at EmmaDilemma ).
The Mirror
Looking back on the last eighteen months of my life, it is so characteristic of God to completely change our course of direction in such a humorous way. I learned several things during this time, but one main thing comes to mind now. I am a TERRIBLE actor. If you Google my name, you will be delighted to find a friend's YouTube short, in which I play a girl named Stacy. I will save you the trouble of the search though and supply your needs!

Five months ago I was planning to leave for college and join the Army. A relationship was never on the horizon and I was more than happy about that. I wanted nothing more than to devote myself to serving as a career JAG Officer. However, I soon realized that was no longer my desire. I want to help young women in America and the Nations around the world heal from hurts and rise up into the new creature the Lord has designed them to be! I have begun studying toward a Bachelor's in Theological Studies with a concentration in Biblical Counseling. The trajectory of my life is a full 180-degree difference from where I was headed a year and a half ago. I am so grateful. I am so blessed.
I will leave you all with a sweet reflection of my former life (and my longer hair!)

A New Investment

Imagine there is a bank which credits your account with $86,400 each morning, carries over no cash balance from day to day, and every evening cancels whatever amount you have failed to use during the day.
What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course!

Well, everyone has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off as lost whatever time you have failed to use to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it erases the records of that day. If you fail to spend the day's deposits wisely, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow."

You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today.

To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask the student who has failed his exam.
To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask the mother who has given birth to a premature baby.
To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize the value of ONE DAY, ask the daily wage laborer who has ten kids to feed.
To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet again.
To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask the person who has just missed the train.
To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask the person who has survived an accident.
To realize the value of MILLI-SECOND, ask the person who has won a silver medal in Olympics.

I recently came back from San Diego on a beach trip to celebrate a friend's birthday, and even though we spent four days (including travel), it seemed that time was passing ever so speedily. And while on a walk down the the boardwalk we were stopped by two other young ladies doing college research. They asked us to watch a 60 second YouTube video and answer a few questions, which ultimately led to their main goal of initiating a spiritual conversation.

The video discussed the value of time and focused on the issue of how we invest our time. 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

How do you spend your time? How do you determine what is most valuable to you? Do you spend most of your time focusing on that which you hold most dear, or does a little go a long way?

I was struck by the blatant truth when asked, "how much time would you say you spend focusing on your spirituality?" I realized that even while on summer vacation, with nearly nothing to do, I still spend less than 30% of my time dedicated to God's word, bowed in prayer and in fellowship with His saints combined!

How appalling!

I am not quite sure how to go about fixing that, though. Should I pop-a-daily-squat and plan out each second of my day and force myself to stick to the schedule? Or, as a Californian might say, "live free" and do this as and when I please?

This confrontation on the beach by two strangers has led me further in my task of shooting for my You3.0 (thank you Elder John Melvin for that phrase) and becoming spiritually fit in my goal of being a Proverbs 31 woman.

Day 1...

Alas! I have entered the dynamic world of blogging!

As summer rolled around, I began brainstorming for ideas of ways to keep my reeling mind from suffocating in its own thoughts. With this brainstorm came brain torrents (of great strength that only further proved my search wasn't in vain). And then one day, I could see the clouds breaking apart! and through the little silver-clouded-butt crack came a fresh notion; I felt I must explore the networking world and find connections.

However, I am still a mite nervous about starting this blog, as I have no clear picture of where it will lead me (....but i suppose that will be the fun part of this?), and I am not so good at talking about myself.

So, Bloggers, you'll just have to bear with me (and definitely give me your feedback), as you get to know me through semi-meaningless stories of my perspective on acquaintances and experiences!
